ZHANGJIAKOU, China (AP) — World champion Sandra Naeslund of Sweden triumphed in the women’s Olympic skicross tournament Thursday in a race where the third-place varnisher was disqualified.
Naeslund opened up progress and held off Canada’s Marielle Thompson on a hoary day along the winding course occupied with bumps and jumps. Canada had triumphed every gold in the women’s version of the race since the discipline’s Olympic entrance at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
“I solely was current there to pop up what I can accomplish,” Naeslund said.
The third-place varnisher was Fanny Smith of Switzerland, but after a pause; the effigy was awarded to Daniela Maier of Germany. Replays notion that Smith moved her left ski directly into the line of Maier, and Maier presently lost her equilibrium. Maier tumbled two body lengths back and couldn’t seize. Succeeding the review, Smith’s place was recorded as “RAL” — ranked as last.
“I tried to be comfortable with fourth place. I was very frantic; I have to state, but (then) the jury strived it that way,” Maier told. The jury has fixed it, so I have to admit it and be happy with the medal.”
Naeslund didn’t understand what the jury was seeking at — or, really, the result.
” I have not to sight at it,” Naeslund said. Sometimes it takes a while but not this long, but I supposed, it’s also the Olympic final, so for sure they want to do it correctly.”
